Poor People
Monday, September 29th, 2008…in America, that is.
When I was in high school (1971), only 32% of all Americans had air conditioning in our homes; 30 years later (2001), 76% of the poor have AC!
When I was in high school, only 43% of all Americans owned a color TV (my family was not one of them); now 97% of the poor have at least one!
In 1971, only 1% of all Americans had a microwave oven; now 73% of the poor have one!
Nearly half of poor American families own their own home. The average poor American has more living space than the average non-poor individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and many other European cities.
Nearly 3/4 of American poor households own a car (nearly 1/3 own two or more cars). 78% have a VCR or DVD player; 62% have cable or satellite TV reception; 1/3 have an automatic dishwasher.
Poverty, in the historic sense, has virtually disappeared in America. This is primarily due to the influence of the gospel, the much-maligned Puritan work ethic, at work for many centuries.
No wonder the rest of the world envies us.
