The Power of the Press

Friday, April 13th, 2007

What do Michael Richards, Mel Gibson, Alberto Gonzales, and Don Imus have in common?

They’re all victims of the “free press” touted by our Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

Everybody loses his temper sometime.  Michael Richards was unfortunate enough to have gotten the attention of the “free press.”

Was Mel Gibson the only man in America slurring slurs that night he was stopped and charged with a DUI?  No, but he was unfortunate enough to be chosen for crucifixion by the “free press.”

Is Atty. Gen. Gonzales the first to fire Federal Attorneys for political reasons?  No – Janet Reno fired all 93 (NOT JUST 8 – ALL 93!!) – but the “free press” ignored it then.  Mr. Gonzales was not so ignored.

Did Don Imus just last week start spewing hateful and hurtful remarks, after 100 years in broadcasting?  No, that’s the schtick he’s been using throughout his career – but last week, the “free press” decided to make a tragic example of him.

So the “free press” – which our founders believed would ensure an informed citizenry – has morphed into an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth.”  Instead of informing us, they are transforming us into polite drones who dare not speak – or even think – badly of anybody or anything.  We’re not that far away from “thought crimes” (”hate crimes” is very, very close).

Don’t get me wrong: I don’t defend what any of these men said or did.  I would just defend their right to say or do it.  That’s our risk-reward system of liberty.  I would rather have a free-thinking populace (even if I disagree with some of them) than today’s so-called “free press.”

We have turned off the “comments” feature of this blog, not because I have changed my mind on the First Amendment, but because cybertrolls were sending “messages” (dozens a day) about everything from tramadol (I guess it’s a drug?) to cars to swimming pools to gay sex.

I guess it’s just another example of man’s ingenuity and depravity.  He is ingenious enough to create an instrument to allow people to communicate instantly from anywhere on the planet and he is depraved enough to turn the information superhighway into a red-light district.

Too bad.  My wife told me she liked reading the comments more than my posts.  There goes 33% of my readership.
